Online Dating Advice

What to do when meeting your online date for the first time

A first date is a critical moment in any relationship, as first impressions count for a lot in dating.

Here are some tips for you to follow and these should ensure that you make a brilliant first impression on your date, which will hopefully lead to a second and third. However it is important to remember that you shouldn't get too disheartened if you do not get a second date, as this will only mean that you are not suitable, which could be a blessing in disguise.

It is quite important to get the location of the date correct, but this is not always easy. It can be hard to find something that you are both interested in doing, ask your date if there is anything in particular that they would like to do and if they do not have a suggestion then be decisive and maybe suggest your favourite restaurant.

A restaurant is a good place for a first date because it can give you something else to concentrate on in those awkward silences and also you can see how your date behaves in public. Also check out our Creative Date Ideas if you would like to try something more adventurous.

Preparation for a First Date is very important:

  • Make sure you know exactly where the location for the first date is, if you have met using an online dating website then you may not be familiar with the area that you are going to, but just try to find out actually how far away it is. Also even more importantly how long it will take you to get there as you do not want to turn up late.

  • Be certain of how you are getting there and back and ideally have your own transport available.

  • Be sure of what you are going to wear for the date and if possible get a friends opinion on your outfit. Remember to only wear what you are comfortable in, as you don't want to appear uncomfortable or uneasy, as your online date will think this is because of them. You should prepare what you are going to wear in advance in order to decrease potential problems when it comes to getting ready, there's nothing worse than not be able to find anything to wear and feeling rushed. If you do not feel that you have anything suitable in your wardrobe then treat yourself to something new, as you want to feel confident and comfortable on the date to make the best impression.

  • You should also prepare something in the way of conversation topics too, so you have something to say if there were any awkward silences.

  • But always remember to stay safe whilst online dating, have a look at our Online Safety tips so you can be safe and not sorry.
